Vacation 99

Home Up Day 1

st Day Sunday July 11th - Today we started our two week vacation.  We left the house around 10:30am and traveled I-5 down to Canyonville Oregon.  We stayed at the Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino (it's a wonderful place).  When we arrived they we're just wrapping up a old car rally.  I've included a few of snapshots of the cars.
nd Day Monday July 12th - Today we took a nice leisurely drive from Canyonville Oregon to Nice California a distant of 400+ miles.  It only took us 12 hours to complete!!  But, the scenery was spectacular.  The road from Grants Pass to Crescent City was really curvy but, the road from Leggett to Fort Bragg was REALLY CURVY!!!  44 miles of road without any straight sections....  But it was beautiful.
rd Day Tuesday July 13th - After our long days travel yesterday, we decided to take it easy.  We spent the day in and around Clear Lake just looking at the local scenery.  We found out from some of the locals that on Monday it got to 112 degrees in the town of Clear Lake.  Today it was much cooler, only the mid to upper 90s.......
th Day Wednesday July 14th - Today we drove to Plymouth California to meet with cousin Bill Allison and his wife Doris at their ranch.  Bill has 300 acres in the foothills of the Sierra.  It is beautiful but it was rather warm.  Bill and Doris were gracious hosts and we really enjoyed our visit.
th Day Thursday July 15th - After another long day yesterday we stayed in the Clear Lake area and visited Anderson Marsh State Park and Clear Lake State Park.  Anderson Marsh is located on the old Anderson Ranch in Lower Lake.  All of the old Ranch Buildings are preserved and we took a guided tour on the Ranch home.  It was very interesting.  We then took the trail to the marsh and saw some beautiful scenery.
th Day Friday July 16th -  Today we traveled to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.  What a fantastic place!!!  It is the premier museum of it's type in the west.  I took a number of pictures, however, the lights were not very bright and a lot of the turned out rather dark.  We also toured the outdoor exhibits and those pictures turned out good.
th Day Saturday July 17th - Today we took our leave from Nice and traveled to Lake Tahoe.  We took the scenic back roads and saw some really beautiful scenery.  Probably the most interesting was the town of North Bloomfield which is a old mining town which has been turned in to a state park. We arrived rather late in South Lake Tahoe.  Being a Saturday night, and us without a reservation, all the good hotel rooms were taken.  We ended up in a 1 star (maybe that's to generous) rated hotel.  We won't make that mistake again!!!!
th Day Sunday July 18th - Today we toured around Lake Tahoe.  What a beautiful site and the weather was fantastic.  After touring around the lake we went to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.  They have quite a collection of old railroad engines and cars predominately from the Virginia and Truckee Railroad.  We spent the night at the Silver Legacy Hotel in Reno.  It certainly was a huge step up from last nights accommodations!!
th Day Monday July 19th - Continuing east across towards Winnemucca Nevada we stopped at the Grimes Point Prehistoric Rock Art Site.  There are 150+ petroglyphs that probably date from 5000 BC to 1500 AD.  Very fascinating !!  This was the end of the picture taking as we have lots of pictures taken on previous trips and it was VERY hot.....
